David Sykes: Finding Joy in the Everyday and the Unexpected

Updated: Jan 13

David creates artworks that explore internet culture, irony, and everyday life. Sometimes, all at once. Working primarily through digital processes, his practice combines humor, observation, and familiar cultural references to evoke moments of joy, even in the unexpected.

David Sykes was born in Kingston, Jamaica, "in the 19th century," as he jokingly says. From a young age, he was drawn to art, inspired not by museums or galleries, but by the imagination of his cousin, Cameka.

"She could draw what she saw, which was wonderful, but when she drew from her imagination, it was incredible."

This spark, combined with a brief moment of childish rivalry, set him on a path that would blend humor, a sense of observation, and a love of the familiar.

By day, Sykes is a designer and art director with over 17 years of experience in local, regional, and international advertising. By night, he creates works that juxtapose seemingly unrelated themes, from breakfast to dissociative identity disorder, all in a quest for joy.

I want people to feel good. To smile or burst out laughing . Even if they find my work silly, that doesn't matter either.

The art of con-texture

Sykes describes his artistic style as resting on two pillars: texture and context. Or, as he humorously puts it, "con-texture." Texture is evident in the layering of his work. Context, meanwhile, establishes an unexpected connection with the viewer and the familiar.

Ideas often start modestly, he explains. A children's book project about life lessons, for example, might develop into a trilogy. His preferred techniques include pen and ink drawing, as well as screen printing, which he often reproduces digitally.

Exploring joy and absurdity

Joy is at the heart of Sykes's work, present in both everyday situations and the most absurd ones. Hiking, time, hot drinks, colonialism, internet culture, breakfast… everything can become a playful starting point for the viewer.

Although his personal experiences do not directly influence his art, his identity subtly permeates it.

Does my identity contribute to it? Perhaps not. What matters is the connection the viewer feels.

Projects and awards

Sykes is currently exhibiting two works at the National Gallery of Jamaica as part of his exhibition " One Jamaica. New Symbols." These pieces, titled "Lada D" and "Sims Tea," extend his playful yet incisive approach to cultural criticism.

This institutional recognition is part of a career marked by successes and significant collaborations. These include the Crestock.com international poster design competition in 2008, his graduation exhibition, organized with the support of his family and friends, and exhibitions such as "The Arrivals" in 2010, widely considered the first exhibition in Jamaica to recognize graphic design as an art form.

Alongside these public successes, more modest and personal projects were of equal importance. One such work, a block-printed piece of fabric created during his second year of university, was later transformed into a skirt by his mother – a gesture that quietly boosted his confidence at a pivotal moment in his career.

Challenges and Growth

Doubt, both internal and external, was a recurring challenge. His strategy was perseverance.

Nothing beats continuous movement to remedy this. I simply continue to create.

Over time, his humor has evolved, moving from lighthearted jokes to a darker and more complex humor, reflecting both his personal growth and his goal of generating joy.

Life and vision of the studio

A typical day includes emails, social media, games, meals, naps, creative activities, and sometimes a meltdown. Outdoor walks and Pinterest help overcome creative blocks.

Looking ahead, Sykes hopes to have a larger studio to bring to life larger-scale ideas and artworks with a significant impact on a large scale.

Final thoughts

David Sykes invites the public to laugh, to reflect, and to connect through his work.

Sykes' art blends literal storytelling, subtle humor, and cultural commentary.

Many of these stories appear on Instagram: @dssykes.

"In my hands, the ordinary becomes extraordinary, the mundane becomes joyful, and even the unexpected finds meaning."

David Sykes invites viewers to laugh, to reflect, and to connect, creating a curious work of art all at once.
