Dominican Republic visual artist Angurria has completed Un MAR de Gente / From Every Shore, a monumental mural spanning the 29-storey Morrisania Air Rights residential tower in the Bronx, New York.

The work transforms the building’s facade into a celebration of the people, cultures and generations that shape the surrounding community, bringing Caribbean artistic expression into a prominent public space.

A Portrait of Community Across Generations

The mural’s composition unfolds through imagery representing family, cultural diversity and the future.

At the top, a maternal figure lifts a child, evoking care and the nurturing of future generations. The central section celebrates the diverse people and cultural influences of the Bronx, including its music and community life. At the bottom, children represent youth, joy and the possibilities that lie ahead.

Together, these images present a portrait of a community shaped by shared experiences, cultural expressions and hopes for the next generation.

The Artists Behind the Mural

The execution of Un MAR de Gente / From Every Shore was led by Angurria, with support from fellow artists Dovente and Son Coro.

The collaboration brought together artistic contributions to realise the mural’s vision at an extraordinary scale, transforming the residential tower into a canvas celebrating the people and cultural legacy of the surrounding neighbourhood.

The wider project also involved Bronx-born artist and community engagement lead Fernando Ortiz. Working alongside Angurria, Ortiz helped facilitate a community-centred process that placed residents’ stories and perspectives at the heart of the artwork.

Art Rooted in Community

Commissioned by ArtBridge, the mural was developed in partnership with the Public Housing Community Fund and other project partners, with support from the M·A·C VIVA GLAM Fund.

Over several months, workshops brought together residents, local youth and community representatives to gather stories and perspectives that helped shape the final design.

The result reflects more than the vision of an individual artist. It brings together artistic practice and community participation to create a public artwork in which residents can recognise their lives, histories and identities.

Caribbean Art in the Public Sphere

For Caribbean artists, public art offers an opportunity to bring cultural narratives into spaces experienced by thousands of people each day. Through Un MAR de Gente / From Every Shore, Angurria and his collaborators bring Caribbean artistic expression into dialogue with the diverse identities and lived experiences of the Bronx.

The mural also invites a wider reflection on representation: whose stories are visible in public spaces, whose histories are celebrated, and how art can help communities see themselves reflected in the environments they inhabit.

At 290 feet, the mural commands attention through its scale. Its significance, however, lies equally in the people and experiences it brings into view.

Un MAR de Gente / From Every Shore is a reminder that Caribbean creativity extends beyond traditional exhibition spaces, finding expression in streets, neighbourhoods and shared environments where culture is lived every day.
