Support for Artists Affected by Hurricane Melissa

Melissa has left its mark, but our resilience paints a new beginning.

Disasters do not only disrupt lives, they threaten the creative spirit that brings our communities to life. Across Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba, many artists now face the loss of their studios, tools and artworks, the very foundations of their livelihood. At Caribalent, our hearts go out to all who have been affected. We stand in solidarity with the artists whose creativity continues to be a beacon of hope for the Caribbean.

In times like these, rebuilding is not only about restoring walls, but about nurturing the spirit of creation that defines who we are as a region. To support artists facing severe hardship, we highlight an important opportunity: the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Emergency Grant.

A lifeline for artists in crisis

The Gottlieb Emergency Grant provides one time financial assistance to professional painters, sculptors and printmakers who have faced a sudden and unforeseen catastrophe, such as a fire, flood or medical emergency.

For artists affected by Hurricane Melissa, this programme can help ease the burden of loss and allow creative practice to continue. Grants of up to USD 15,000 are available, with most awards averaging around USD 5,000. There is no fixed deadline, and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the year.

Who can apply

Applicants must:

  • Have at least ten years of professional experience in painting, sculpture or printmaking

  • Demonstrate that their need results from a sudden catastrophic event

  • Provide documentation of both the incident and their established artistic practice

Although the foundation is based in the United States, it welcomes applications from artists worldwide, including the Caribbean.

Standing together as One Caribbean

The road to recovery may be long, but Caribbean creativity has always been rooted in resilience. Our islands share more than geography; we share a rhythm, a strength and a cultural heartbeat that cannot be silenced.

This grant represents more than financial relief, it is a recognition of the dedication and cultural significance of artists who continue to create despite adversity. It offers a chance to rebuild, to renew and to remind the world that our art, like our people, endures.

How to apply

If you or an artist you know has been affected:

  1. Document the damage – photographs, reports or receipts showing the impact of Hurricane Melissa

  2. Gather your professional record – CV, exhibition list and images of your work showing at least ten years of artistic practice

  3. Submit your application via the official website: www.gottliebfoundation.org/emergency-grant

  4. Apply early as funding is limited and considered until the annual budget is reached

Caribalent’s promise

At Caribalent, we believe that the creative spirit of the Caribbean must never be lost to disaster. We will continue to amplify opportunities that help our artists recover, rebuild and thrive.

To every artist picking up the pieces after Hurricane Melissa, your art matters, your voice matters, and your resilience inspires us all.

Together, we rise. Together, we rebuild. Together, we create as One Caribbean.
